Frequently asked questions
We recommend taking a breastfeeding class during their third trimester of pregnancy or around 36 weeks, which provides plenty of time to prepare and have all your questions answered before the baby arrives. You can also join our Baby Feeding Support Group each Tuesday from 10am -11:30am where we have IBCLC's that will answer your questions about both breastfeeding and bottle feeding in a judgemet-free zone.,
There are many different breastfeeding classes available, so it's important to find one that's right for you. Some classes are held in person, while others are offered online or through a parenting book or video. You can also find a lactation consultant who can provide one-on-one help.
The most important thing is to prepare for success. Your midwife can help you find the resources needed to start your breastfeeding journey.
Breastfeeding classes cover everything from latching and feeding to more detailed topics such as expressing milk and handling common problems. They're beneficial if you're having problems breastfeeding or if you plan to bottle-feed your baby breastmilk. In breastfeeding classes, you'll usually try different nursing positions and learn how to use a breast pump.
Breastfeeding classes are typically taught by Lactation Consultants and/or Midwives who are experts in the field of breastfeeding, providing supportive ways to learn more about breastfeeding and have your questions answered.
Breastfeeding offers a variety of health benefits to both moms and babies. Breast milk is packed with nutrients that help newborns grow and develop robust immune systems. It can also help protect mothers from certain types of cancer, like ovarian cancer and breast cancer. Breastfeeding can help reduce the risk of postpartum depression, and since breastmilk is a dynamic living tissue, it literally changes its composition to meet your baby's specific needs, feeding to feeding. Breastmilk is amazing, and we are learning more every day about its' benefits. That being said, at A Family Affair Birth & Pregnancy Care Center, we know no one way fits every family. We are a judgment-free center with only one rule : Feed the Baby. And if you will be preparing formula for your baby, please reach out for guidance on the proper ways to prepare and store your baby's bottles and formula.
