Tamara Hobbs - Biography
My journey into midwifery began with preparing for the birth of my own children, and the warm, loving care I found in my childbirth educator, Sally. She planted a seed in my heart that continues to grow to this day.
Having served in many capacities, from birth doula, to childbirth educator, postpartum doula, certified lactation consultant, to Midwife, Spinning Babies Aware Practitioner, and owner of A Family Affair Midwifery and A Family Affair Birth & Wellness Center, I bring many years of experience in the birth and family care realm.
My whole life has been preparation for being a Midwife, for building a birth center to welcome others into my “home,” and for being welcomed into the homes of those who desire to birth their baby in their own home. Whichever they choose, each is their own sacred space. Where one gives birth, that is hallowed ground. The place where internal life comes earthside, into the welcoming arms of their parents. No two births are alike. Each is unique, each so special. As a Midwife, while I am the overseer and defender of safe, natural, physiological birth. I also am the eagle eye of the bigger picture, prepared to protect and preserve the safety of pregnancy, the safety of birth, keeping an eye out for what may go astray. Knowing to recognize the subtle signs, and help pull them back into normal, that is the art of midwifery.
Having attended hundreds of births, both in the hospital setting, in the birth center, and of course, home births, nothing matters more than the connection you have with those you serve. They are the guiding force in their care and their birth.
With a degree in Respiratory Therapy (graduating with honors), treating veterans in the VA hospital, to Pediatric ICU, then to Neonatal Intensive Care, one thing is for sure. I learned to listen. To watch. To take in the space, to hold that space and to observe, and treat each one as a unique individual. And that is what I bring to Midwifery. Years of understanding that I do not know all, but understanding that when I am open, and I am applying my skills, training and intuition, I am able to build that bridge to holistic, natural, compassionate care, without sacrificing the importance of modern evidence based care which is essential.
As a Midwife, serving a diverse group of families, each with their own unique needs, dreams and desires for their family, this is my life's work. This is my calling. I am honored and humbled, to be invited to be alongside the families I serve. I believe I have been entrusted with creating a space for others, to feel welcomed, loved, accepted and respected. I am simply the keeper of the vision, the steward of the space. My personal motto is “Love knows no bounds. Give love. Change lives.” That is what Sally did for me. And now, I pay it forward.
